Dr. Laura Copley

Ph.D, LPC, CTS

Relationship trauma doesn’t just impact the connection and safety we have with someone. it disrupts our ability to trust ourselves. It makes us question our thoughts, doubt our emotions, and betray our own needs. Healing isn’t just about moving past the pain; it’s about reclaiming your sense of self, deepening your relationships, and stepping into a life of authenticity, emotional wisdom, and connection. Self-trust is the key to true trauma recovery, and I’m here to help you rebuild it.

As the only Ph.D Certified Trauma Counselor in the Shenandoah Valley, I specialize in trauma bonds, attachment wounds, toxic relationship cycles, and Post-Traumatic Growth. My work integrates the latest in trauma-informed care, combining Integrative Somatic Psychotherapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, Attachment Work, EMDR, Biofeedback, Expressive Arts, and Internal Family Systems (IFS) for a holistic, deeply personalized treatment experience

Beyond therapy, I am the author of Loving You is Hurting Me, the only true book written by a practicing trauma-informed therapist that not only addresses how to heal from complex trauma but also teaches readers how to cultivate Post-Traumatic Growth in their personal lives and relationships. I also host the podcast Tough Love with Dr. Laura Copley, where I explore emotional resilience, healing, and transformative growth. My work has been featured in Psychology Today, The Journal of Mental Health Counseling, and The Journal of Humanistic Counseling, and I’ve taught at an R1 research institution, training the next generation of trauma-informed therapists.

Loving You Is Hurting Me: A New Approach to Healing Trauma Bonds and Creating Authentic Connection

At the core of most toxic relationships is a painful trauma wound desperate to be healed. As a licensed professional counselor and trauma researcher, Dr. Laura Copley often found herself disturbed by the stigma that her profession puts on trauma survivors who are in these toxic bonds, often too quickly labeling them as victims or abusers and blaming them for their troubled relationships.

Too often, survivors of trauma are left feeling hopeless, exiled from normal social interactions, and destined for heartbreak in any relationship they attract. Through her work with clients, and her own experiences, Dr. Copley developed a roadmap for healing the toxic emotions that come from being bonded by trauma in relationships

In Loving You is Hurting Me, Dr. Copley guides you through your trauma origins and into a life rich with meaning, loving connection, and inspiration. Drawing from groundbreaking science on trauma and its effects on the body, and from her own practice including a decade’s worth of research on trauma and intimacy, Dr. Copley presents an experiential and transformative approach unlike any other. Her program transforms your trauma bond into deep connection with the self and safe intimacy with others.
